Terskiy Stud Farm history
In 1889 count Stroganov founded a pedigree stud farm for pureblood horse breeding in Northern Caucasus at the foot of mount Beshtau. The farm prospered and Stroganov’s horses were popular in Russia and abroad.

During The Civil War (1917-1920) the farm was brought to ruin. But in 1921 a decree to found a Terskiy military stud farm was signed. The farm was to provide the cavalry officers with Arab horses. The farm was named after Terskiy Cossack force that was situated in those parts.

In 1949 the breed was named Terskaya and the farm was awarded with Labor Red Banner Order. It also became one of the best horse farms in Russia. At first the studs were imported from England, France, Hungary, Poland and Egypt. Nasim, Kann, Kohelayn IV, Piloun studs and Belle-e-Bonn, Carabine, Sapine, Rixelina IV, Risalma, Dziva, Mamona mares were imported this way. They influenced the breed a lot.

In 1963 N. S. Khrushev Secretary General of Central Comitee of Soviet Union Communist Party was presented with a stud Asuan (Nazir-Yusriya) by the Egyptian president Abdal Naser. The stud influenced the Arab horse breeding a lot.

In 1967 Napraslina mare, born at Terskiy stud farm became the USA champion. Since then the European and US interest in Terskiy Arabs increased dramatically. Many Arab horses bred at the Tver stud farm became acknowledged champions in FRG, Sweden, Netherlands, Italy and many other countries.

In 1974 Howard Kale, who bought a considerable number of horses (including Muscat, a stud who then became an Arab horse show winner in the US and Canada a number of times) visited Tver stud farm in search for a stud. Due to Howard Kale’s effort Arabs of the Terskiy stud farm became widely recognized in the world. That is how the term ‘Russian Arab’ came to be.

In the 70’s and 80’s international auctions were held on a regular basis at the Terskiy stud farm. Arab horses were sold there. In 1981 Pesnya (Nabeg-Pechnya) stud was sold for $1000 000, in 1983 – Menes (Nabeg-Metropoliya) for $1,500 000, in 1986 – Peleng (Nabeg-Palmira) – for $2,350 000.

After the Chernobyl accident and due to the Chechnya war the auction selling horses of Arab breed was moved to Netherlands, to the Kossak Stud farm, and was held there until 2005. Carat, one of the studs sold there, became a reserve champion at the European Championship in 2005 in Belgium.

At present Terskiy pedigree stud farm is a joint-stock company. But the government is one of the owners of the farm. One of the main spheres of activity of Terskiy stub farm is breeding and selling of pureblood Arab horses for show, derby and hobby.
